  • Exeter boss also ruled out putting his players into an enforced bubble this week

Rob Baxter hopes Jack Nowell will be fit for the European Cup final against Racing 92 next Saturday and Exeter will make a call early next week on his fitness.

The England wing, 27, missed the Premiership semi-final win against Bath on Saturday with a foot injury.

Baxter said: ‘We look pretty good injury wise. Nowellsy is progressing every day and there is a potential for him to be available. We will make that call early in the week.

‘We could be virtually at full strength.’ Racing had an outbreak of COVID positives last week, and ahead of the final Baxter is wary that Exeter need to be careful to avoid the same.

‘We’ve got to get through our tests on Tuesday,’ he added.

‘If we don’t players will be unavailable for the final. The lads aren’t being silly, but the trouble is it is spreading through the student population in particular.

‘It doesn’t take a lot to pick it up in a completely innocent way. You do see the odd case coming up in rugby clubs. You’ve just got to be careful.

But he ruled out putting his Chiefs into an enforced bubble.

‘We can’t,’ he said.

‘Guys have got wives and kids. You can’t just say “that’s it, you can’t go anywhere”. I don’t think it would work or be good for the players.’
