Arsenal draw up Thomas Partey medical plan as Gunners to pay clause for deadline day move

Arsenal are rapidly drawing up plans for Thomas Partey to undergo a medical in Madrid as they make plans to pay the Atletico Madrid midfielder’s release clause. The Gunners have made a deadline day to bring the Ghanaian to the Emirates as their seventh summer signing.

Mikel Arteta has been unable to land his top target all summer with the Atletico holder’s £45million release clause proving elusive.

But after several exits, Arsenal have seemingly freed up some cash to make a real go at bringing Partey to the Premier League today.

The transfer window closes at 11pm tonight and Arsenal are moving quickly with their preparations as they hope to exercise Partey’s release clause.

The Athletic say Arsenal have been in contact with the player’s camp to make it clear that they plan to make a move for him.

Arsenal are currently said to being making the necessary arrangements to ensure that a deal can go through before the deadline.

And as part of those preparations, the Londoners are making plans for Partey to have a medical in the Spanish capital to save time, rather than fly him over to England.

It is said Arsenal are already aware of the personal terms that the 27-year-old will demand to move to the Champions League hopefuls.

Previously, it has been suggested Partey will command wages of around £200,000 a week – which would make him Arsenal’s third-highest paid player after Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But the arrival of Partey at the Emirates would be a significant injection of fresh optimism as Arsenal hunt a top-four finish.

So far this summer, Willian, Gabriel Magalhaes and Runar Alex Runarsson have arrived at Arsenal.

While Arteta has also made Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares’ loan moves permanent and re-signed Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid.

But Partey would be a huge coup given his Champions League pedigree, having made 132 appearances for Diego Simeone’s Los Rojiblancos.

He was one of the best players on the park as Atletico knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League last 16 at Anfield back in March.

And Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn said of the African to FreeSuperTips: “I really like Partey because he is quick, solid and powerful off the ball as much as on it.

Transfer deadline day: What time does the summer transfer window close tonight?

“There have been times in the past when Arsenal fail to break things down because of the pace of other teams on the counterattack, which is something that Partey could come in to do.

“He takes the ball in tight situations and has the power and the ability to go past the opposing midfield players.

“Once you start to eliminate in this way, as Partey does, you tend to open space in and around the opposition’s defence.

“With Arsenal’s pace up front, they can take advantage of this and cause some damage.

“Mikel Arteta is not totally happy with the midfield that he currently has and looks like he wants to change it up.”
