Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is close to agreeing his move to Atletico Madrid on a season loan with option to make the deal permanent for £22m.
The Uruguay international’s representative Pablo Betancur held positive talks with Atletico earlier this week and Arsenal sporting director Edu is keen to help push a deal through.
Atletico are in the process of raising funds ahead of finalising terms for Torreira and want to move on Mexican winger Hector Herrera to make room in their squad. They are also asking an £8m loan fee for winger Thomas Lemar who has interest from Red Bull Leipzig.

Arsenal retain an interest in Atletico’s Thomas Partey but he is not part of Torreira’s transfer at this stage. They are also running negotiations with Lyon for Houssem Aouar but, so far, have fallen well short of the French side’s valuation.
Torreira, 24, who cost Arsenal £26m from Sampdoria in 2018, had interest from Torino and Fiorentina in Italy but is eager to link up with Diego Simeone and play in LaLiga.
Arsenal are also looking to offload other fringe players with Napoli having shown interest in Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Marseille keen on Matteo Guendouzi, Lazio asking about Shkodran Mustafi and Bayer Leverkusen offering £9m for Sead Kolasinac.
