Atletico Madrid furious at Arsenal chief Edu and Gunners board over Thomas Partey transfer

The relationship between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid bosses is said to be ‘irreparable’ after the Gunners signed Thomas Partey on deadline day. Mikel Arteta had been linked with the midfielder for much of the summer, but up until Monday his side had failed to trigger his release clause.

However, that all changed on the final day of the international window, when Arsenal finally matched the £45million clause in his contract.

The deal then quickly progressed with Arsenal confirming the transfer shortly after the window closed.

Atletico confirmed Partey’s departure in a short statement prior to Arsenal’s announcement and relations between the two clubs are said to extremely frosty.

According to the Athletic, the Spaniards were left stunned by the 11th hour move from north London, particularly as they weren’t directly consulted.

The report suggests that Diego Simeone and his team were only informed of the impending transfer, after a deal had been agreed.

La Liga officials had to tell Atleti that the move was imminent, with club chiefs left furious by the lack of notice.

Atleti have made several unsuccessful attempts to increase the release clause in Partey’s deal and it has come back to bite them at the end of the international window.

Arteta was delighted to get his top target in after weeks of frustrations trying to add a midfielder to his squad.

He said: “We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad.

“He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game.

“He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”

Meanwhile, the breakdown between the two boardrooms could have rammifications on Lucas Torreira’s future after he went in the opposite direction.

The Uruguayan was deemed surplus to requirements under Arteta, particularly if they were able to bring in a signing before the deadline.

He joined Atleti on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has questioned whether that move could still be viable.

“Atlético Madrid will also have an option to buy Lucas Torreira on June 2021,” Romano Tweeted on Tuesday.

“Buy option clause price would be €21m.
