David Moyes set Man Utd board Edinson Cavani transfer ultimatum involving Robin van Persie

David Moyes was ready to bring Edinson Cavani to Old Trafford during his time at the club, even at the expense of Robin van Persie. In early 2014, the Scot started drawing up plans for the summer transfer market with his underperforming squad in desperate need of additional quality.

While United’s defence was leaking goals, the side’s attack was struggling to record the same numbers as the 2012/13 title-winning season in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year at Old Trafford.

The club were preparing for a big summer and wanted to make amends in the market following a dismal campaign.

At this point, Moyes was still convinced he would keep his job and there was one blockbuster signing he wanted signed off.

According to The Mirror, the former Everton boss was ready to sign Cavani and let Van Persie leave.

It was a bold verdict from Moyes, given that Van Persie had struck 30 times in all competitions the previous season.

In Cavani, he felt United may have a new hero who could help them reestablish their grip on English football.

The Uruguayan was frustrated at the time that he found himself playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Paris.

He was often shafted out wide by Laurent Blanc to accommodate the Swede, who would eventually join United in 2016.

Cavani’s father and agent made several flirtatious comments about the prospect of joining United.

But in the end, he would stay put in France and go on to become the club’s record goalscorer.

The 33-year-old did eventually cut ties with PSG earlier this year and now he has signed for United on a free transfer.

He will need to get match fit before making an impact at Old Trafford though given that he has not played in seven months.

Cavani decided against signing a short-term contract extension at the Parc des Princes and therefore missed the club’s Champions League campaign in August.

PSG went on to reach the final before being beaten 1-0 by Bayern while Cavani was back home in South America.

At United he has been handed the No 7 shirt, a jersey he wore during his time at Napoli and with the national team.

Former Red Devils midfielder Ander Herrera also played his part in convincing Cavani to join United, following a phone call between the pair.

The duo became close friends last season at PSG and Herrera told Cavani that joining United was an opportunity he could not turn down.
