England slumped to a 1-0 defeat in their Nations League clash Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday night after Harry Maguire was shown a red card early on for the hosts.

Gareth Southgate’s men came into their meeting with the Danes full of confidence after picking up victories over Wales and Belgium over the past six days.

However, they were left with a mountain to climb at the national stadium when Maguire saw red for two bookable offences on the half-hour mark.

And four minutes later Christian Eriksen bagged what proved the winner from the spot after Kyle Walker was controversially penalised for a foul on Thomas Delaney.

The Three Lions huffed and puffed in the second half, but they could not find that all-important equaliser.

Here’s how our reporter Paul Brown rated their performances on the night…

England player ratings

JORDAN PICKFORD 5 – Still pings a lovely pass but just doesn’t command his penalty area with any authority at all.

REECE JAMES 7 – A baptism of fire after the sending off. England should have made more of his crosses

AINSLEY MAITLAND-NILES 5 – Sacrificed when Maguire was sent off. Not what he wanted on his full debut.

KYLE WALKER 5 – Unlucky to concede first-half penalty but should have dealt with the danger. Ropey afterwards.

HARRY MAGUIRE 4 – Oh dear. Got himself sent off after 30 minutes in one to forget. Dire.

CONOR COADY 8 – Showed off his impressive passing range and as usual, as loud as ever.

DECLAN RICE 5 – In a game crying out for a forward pass he chose to go sideways too much.

KALVIN PHILLIPS 6 – Played it too safe and just does not look comfortable playing alongside Rice.

MASON MOUNT 6 – Great workrate but too often failed to find a team-mate when he got into good positions.

MARCUS RASHFORD 5 – Made poor decisions. Failed to threaten in the first half and wasted chances in the second.

HARRY KANE 5 – Does not look fit and struggled to get going. Maybe Jose Mourinho was right that he needs more of a rest.

Subs:

TYRONE MINGS (for Maitland-Niles 36) 6 – Got stuck in.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN (for Rashford 72)

JADON SANCHO (for Mount 72)

JORDAN HENDERSON (for Rice 76)

Subs not used: Pope, D Henderson, Saka, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Ward-Prowse, Grealish, Ings.
