Jadon Sancho ‘bewildered’ by Man Utd transfer saga as Ed Woodward strategy backfires

Manchester United’s drawn out approach to signing Jadon Sancho had been heavily criticised, and their strategy heavily backfired with the England winger remaining at Borussia Dortmund for the time being. Ed Woodward is thought to have taken a hard-nosed approach to Dortmund’s asking price.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho has reportedly been left “bewildered” by Manchester United’s transfer strategy this summer.

The Red Devils have spent most of the window chasing England international Sancho.

But never really looked to be close to snapping up the 21-year-old, with Dortmund refusing to lower their asking price.

Sky Sports claim that Sancho was keen on a move to United, and was waiting for them to finally stump up the cash.

But Old Trafford supremo Ed Woodward refused to do so, leaving him in limbo, having expected to make the move.

Sancho is expected to make the switch at some stage, but must now keep his head down in Germany to continue his development.

Dortmund showed they arena pushovers when executive Michael Zorc officially ruled out a transfer in the press.

“We are planning with Sancho,” he said. “He’ll play for us next season. The decision is final. I think that answers all of the questions.”

“Last summer, we adjusted the salary in line with Jadon’s performance. In this context, we have extended the contract until 2023.”

Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl later echoed Zorc’s comments, insisting United’s offers had been well off the mark.

He told Sport 1: “We agreed that we had to show a certain attitude. And €80m are simply not enough for such a player. We owed that to the club and the fans. I don’t want to give him up either.

“Without Jadon this team is worse.

“Jadon has trained well and professionally. He is happy to play football. Yes, someday he might leave for a new challenge but right now he is happy at Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Dortmund is happy to have him.

“He is here – and he will stay here. It was an important statement from the club because we have a certain responsibility.”
