Jamie Carragher pinpoints what surprised him about Liverpool lineup vs Man City

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted he was surprised by Jurgen Klopp’s team selection for their clash with Manchester City.

With debate ahead of kick off over whether Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota would start as the part of the Reds’ front three, Klopp pulled the surprise card and played them both.

The attacking quartet meant the German needed to change his system somewhat from the 4-3-3 formation Liverpool have become synonymous with.

And Carragher revealed before the game that he was taken aback by the gutsy call from Klopp to throw caution to the wind.

“Yes I am [surprised], slightly,” the Anfield hero said on Sky Sports.

“Liverpool, notoriously under Jurgen Klopp, have been a 4-3-3 team, very rarely moved away from that.

“To do that at what he’s calling the most difficult place in world football to go is a slight shock.

“But maybe in the back of his mind he’s looking at his record and Liverpool’s record here when they’ve come with that 4-3-3 and thought, ‘you know what, why not go for it?’

“City’s weakness is at the back, and just play the players that are in form.

“Roberto Firmino, for me, was always going to start this game as this is one of the few games this season where Liverpool will go for long periods without the ball.
