Joe Gomez moment shows Liverpool players’ trust in goalkeeper Adrian

A moment of indecision between Joe Gomez and Adrian appeared to sum up the Liverpool defence's apparent lack of trust in the Reds' No.2 goalkeeper.

Adrian has recently been filling in for first-choice Alisson, who has been absent since injuring his shoulder in a training session two weeks ago.

The Spaniard suffered a nightmare evening in Liverpool's shock 7-2 humiliation against Aston Villa earlier this month, while he also shipped two goals in the 2-2 draw in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday.

A number of pundits have suggested that Adrian does not inspire much confidence in the Liverpool back-line, and with their talismanic leader Virgil van Dijk also now injured Jurgen Klopp's defence is looking shakier than ever.

And an incident in the first-half of the Reds' Champions League game against Ajax on Wednesday demonstrated a clear lack of communication.

Ajax forward David Neres ran onto a long ball, which Gomez was shepherding towards Adrian.

At the last minute, however, Adrian raced off his line to clear the ball, barging into Gomez in the process and just about managing to get it away.

Although no damage was done, Gomez looked visibly annoyed with his goalkeeper, and gestured in frustration towards him afterwards.

The good news for Liverpool is that Alisson appears to be closing in on a return to the fold.

Speaking ahead of the Ajax game, Klopp provided a positive update by saying: "Ali looks very good. We have to see; catching balls and stuff like this is all possible. But we cannot rush it and will not rush it.

"Actually, it’s a common thing every day when I see Ali, I say: ‘How was it today?’ He always with a big smile tells me of the slight improvements. Today I didn’t see him [yet], so I can’t wait to ask for his progress!"

Liverpool went in at half-time 1-0 up in Amsterdam courtesy of a Nicolas Tagliafico own goal.
