Liverpool boss Klopp ‘eyeing £27m transfer’ for Ozan Kabak after Van Dijk injury

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking into a €30million transfer for Bundesliga starlet Ozan Kabak as cover for Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds have been forced to make a centre-back the priority for the January transfer window after the Dutchman picked up an ACL tear in the Merseyside derby.

With the injury expected to keep out the 29-year-old for most of the season, meaning the Premier League champions have been looking for alternatives.

Fabinho put in an impressive performance at centre-back in Liverpool’s Champions League-opening 1-0 win over Ajax.

But the club are expected to be busy in the next transfer window, with several names being thrown into the mix.

And Sport Mediaset have reported that the Reds are now set to pursue Kabak as a replacement in January.

Klopp is said to be “aiming” for the Schalke defender – but they will have to contend with AC Milan for his signature.

If they come out on top, the Turkish international will cost €30m [£27.1m] to pry away from the Bundesliga.

Kabak only joined Schalke last season in a €15m deal from Stuggart, making 28 appearances and even scoring three goals.

And this period has seen the 20-year-old earn four international caps for Turkey in the Euro qualification campaign.

But West Ham legend Carlton Cole believes Fabinho, who joined the club from Monaco in 2018, is already the “perfect cover” for van Dijk.

He told Stadium Astro : “It’s a big blow for Liverpool but I do believe they have good cover.

“I watched Fabinho play his outstanding game against Chelsea and he was brilliant in that position.

“For me, he was man of the match for the way he controlled [Timo] Werner. He was really, really good that day”.

While the Brazilian’s performance against Ajax earned him high praise from the Anfield faithful, especially for his goal-line clearance.
