Liverpool consider Daryl Janmaat deal after being offered fully-fit defender

Liverpool have reportedly been offered former Newcastle star Daryl Janmaat with the Reds suffering a defensive crisis.

Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are both in battles to play again this season with the centre-back duo having suffered knee injuries.

It has left Jurgen Klopp with Joel Matip as his only recognised senior centre-back for the Premier League champions.

Liverpool are also without Trent Alexander-Arnold for up to four weeks after he suffered a calf injury against Manchester City.

Janmaat is available having left Championship club Watford, following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Dutchman can play as a right-back or centrally and TEAMtalk explain that he has been given a glowing reference by compatriot and Reds star Georginio Wijnaldum.

Liverpool are believed to be considering a short-term deal with Janmaat wanting a deal until the end of the season.

Gomez is set to miss the majority of the season having injured himself while on England duty this week.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate had said before the scans: “What was upsetting was to see him in a fair bit of pain.

"The fact was there was nobody around him when the injury happened. I didn't like that element of it.

"We just have to wait and see what the scans show. We are all hopeful for him that it's not what it might be.

"It's not a good situation. I don't see him being involved in the games with us, that's for sure.

“We can't speculate on the exact nature of the injury. It's not possible until we've seen scans.

"My immediate thoughts are with him because he has had some difficulty with injury in the past.

"We are hoping as much as we possibly can and praying that it's not going to be a long-term one but we'll just have to see."
