Man Utd hero Fabien Barthez returns to football from successful motorsport stint

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has returned to football after a successful stint in motorsport – taking on a coaching role with boyhood club Toulouse.

Barthez enjoyed an iconic career in between the sticks, winning two Premier League titles with United and the Champions League with Marseille, while also playing a crucial part in France’s 1998 World Cup triumph.

But after hanging up the gloves in 2007, the shot-stopper decided to switch lanes into the world of motorsport – where he secured two top 10 finishes at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Now Barthez has gone full circle, bringing his driving career to a close and returning to Toulouse to become a goalkeeping coach.

He first joined the French club at the age of 15 and was handed his professional debut five years later, before sealing a move to Marseille in 1992.

And the ex-goalkeeper is delighted to be back at Stadium de Toulouse, saying: “My pure passion has driven me to involve myself as a consultant.

“I want to transmit and share my vision of the keeper's role in its entirety, together with the coaching staff, for the benefit of Toulouse's goalkeepers.

“I want to thank the president, Damien Comolli, the directors and coaches, for their trust and their welcome.”

Toulouse said in a statement: “He will enrich our club with his experience, technical skill and knowledge.”

After claiming Champions League glory with Marseille, Barthez later joined Monaco and helped the club to two Division 1 titles before leaving for United in 2000.

He racked up 139 appearances in his time at Old Trafford before being sent back to Marseille in 2003.
