Manchester United are running out of time in their search for squad reinforcements.
With only one new addition – Donny van de Beek – to show for their efforts during the transfer window so far, the Red Devils have until 11pm on Monday to strengthen key areas of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
The shortcomings in the Norwegian’s squad were brutally laid bare in the first game of their new campaign, a 3-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace.
The United rumour mill remains as busy as ever, of course, with speculation rife over potential comings and goings at Old Trafford.
With United stepping up their quest for new arrivals, here is a round-up of the latest rumours.
United fail in Chiesa bid
United have failed in an attempt to sign Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa on loan, according to The Telegraph.
United turned to Chiesa with the club having grown frustrated in their long-running pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.
However, Fiorentina are not willing to sanction a loan for 22-year-old Chiesa, who has also attracted interest from Juventus.
Chiesa had his best season in Serie A in 2019/20, scoring 10 times in 34 games. He has one goal in 19 caps for Italy.
The Red Devils have also been linked with a loan move for Barcelona ’s Ousmane Dembele, although there are doubts over the player’s desire to move to Old Trafford this season.
Dembele on four-man Sancho alternatives shortlist
According to Sky Sports, Dembele is one of four players on United’s shortlist of players they will try to sign if they fail to land top target Sancho.
In addition to Dembele, United are looking at Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, who scored five Premier League goals for the Hornets last season. United have more time to sign Sarr as the deadline for deals between Premier League and EFL clubs is October 16.
And while they do not represent like-for-like alternatives to Sancho, strikers Edinson Cavani and Luka Jovic are also being looked at by the Old Trafford decision-makers.
Cavani is a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain while Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane would not stand in the way of Jovic’s departure.
Costa turns down United
One player who seemingly won’t be joining United is Douglas Costa, who has turned overtures from the club to fight for his place at Juventus, according to Calciomercato.
Costa, 31, is determined to prove his worth to new Juve boss Andrea Pirlo after starting the first two Serie A games of the new season on the bench for the Italian champions.
The Brazilian’s stance may clash with Juve’s plans, however, with sporting director Fabio Paratici said to need to raise funds in order finance new signings.
Costa joined Juve from Bayern Munich on loan in 2017 before making that deal permanent a year later.
Roma set to complete Smalling deal
Roma are close to signing Chris Smalling from United on a permanent basis, according to The Athletic.
United want close to £20m for the 30-year-old centre-back, who impressed on loan with the Italian side last season.
Despite Smalling’s imminent departure, United do not plan to sign a replacement in defence.
Smalling has made 323 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from Fulham in 2010, winning two Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford.
