Man Utd transfer news: Sancho ‘end of the road’, Telles deal deadline today, Lukaku advice

It has been an underwhelming start to the Premier League season for Manchester United. A defeat to Crystal Palace was followed by an unconvincing win against Brighton and Hove Albion that required a controversial penalty awarded by VAR after the full-time whistle.

United’s poor performance has only raised further questions about the club’s lack of significant spending. Ajax’s Donny van de Beek is the only senior arrival thus far, while the club’s main target, Jadon Sancho, seems set to remain with Borussia Dortmund despite United’s best efforts to sign him.

With just two days remaining in the summer transfer window, time is short for United to acquire much-needed talent as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to close the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table.

There are several deals being reported, including pushes for Sancho, Alex Telles, and Ousmane Dembele, while fans continue to wait for United to make the marquee signings they demand.

Here is a round-up of the latest Manchester United transfer rumours.

United reach “end of the road” with Sancho

The Sancho saga continues to rage on. Despite United’s consistent interest throughout the summer transfer window, no deal has reportedly come close, and after Dortmund’s self-imposed August 8th deadline was missed, the club has repeatedly insisted that the English international will not depart.

Those statements have been confirmed by reports in the media this week, as Sky Sports unequivocally revealed that United’s move for Sancho has reached the “end of the road”.

Sky Sports’ Gary Cotterill stated: “Everybody at Dortmund – the sporting director, the head coach, the press officer, the fans and certainly the media – have said it all along [that Sancho is staying].

“The media have told me they are not even following the story. I’m afraid to say that yes, it is the end of the road of Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford.”

Lukaku plays down need for striker

United’s lack of transfer activity in the attacking department, which is spearheaded by their failure to sign Sancho, has upset a large portion of the fanbase.

Nevertheless, former striker Romelu Lukaku, who completed a permanent exit to Inter Milan last summer, has suggested that the club’s need for a new centre-forward is not as great as some suggest thanks to the emergence of Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

“If you buy another striker, what are you going to do with Anthony Martial. He’s now being the No 9 at a great club,” he told the Times.

“Give him the full season to confirm what he did last year instead of bringing in someone big to disrupt the chemistry in the dressing room.

“Then you have Mason’s transition that is going to happen any time soon from right-wing to No 9, and Mason is a killer. I’ve seen him first hand. He’s got something.”

United must agree deal for Telles on Saturday

One position that Solskjaer is reportedly keen to address is left-back. It is said that he would like to add competition for Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.

One reported target is Porto’s Alex Telles. The left-back has a year remaining on his contract. He was the subject of an offer from Ed Woodward that was worth half of Porto’s £18million price tag, per the Telegraph.

And now the Express report that United must agree a deal with Porto on Saturday, if they want to push the transfer over the line by the October 5th deadline.

United are reportedly reluctant to match Porto’s £18million valuation. Knowing that they can sign the defender on a pre-contract agreement in January in a free-agent deal, the club is hesitant to overspend.

However, with the October 5 deadline looming, Woodward and co. are under pressure to complete a deal.
