Michael Edwards could accelerate Liverpool transfer plan to make stellar January signing

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards could bring forward the club’s transfer plan to spend big on a new defender in the January window. That is according to European football expert Julien Laurens, who says it is a necessity that Liverpool add at least one defender in the winter window. The Reds are set to be without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the majority of this season.

Gomez underwent surgery on Thursday on the knee injury he picked up in England training this week.

He joins Van Dijk on the sidelines to seriously stretch the resources available to manager Jurgen Klopp.

Laurens does not think Liverpool can rely on Fabinho to play at the back for the remainder of the season.

And therefore he reckons Edwards could accelerate the club’s plan to spend big on a new centre-back, which was already on the agenda either next summer or the year after.

Laurens told ESPN FC: “I think now with Gomez’s injury, and unfortunately for him it looks like it’s a very serious one, even if Fabinho comes back soon which should be the case, I don’t think it’s enough for the objectives and ambitions that Liverpool have this season.

“Let’s not forget as well that with [Joel] Matip’s age and Van Dijk’s age as well, there was going to be a point where they would have had to go and get another centre-back anyway for the years to come.

“So I think you just move that up if you can in January and then either you go for someone that will help you and is maybe more of a short or mid-term solution, or you go for a long-term solution who’s much younger and maybe more expensive, like [Dayot] Upamecano for example, and you invest as heavily as early as January.

“That would be for Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards to decide but certainly now the need is huge for them to go and get someone in January regardless.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol hopes Klopp has a plan to solve the club’s defensive problems up until the window opens.

“It’s a disaster, again,” Nicol told ESPN.

“You’re talking three of your back four gone in the space of six weeks.

“Virgil van Dijk obviously was a complete disaster, [Trent] Alexander-Arnold going down made things tougher, but Joe Gomez going down now, where do they turn?

“You’ve got a couple of kids in [Rhys] Williams and [Nat] Phillips, you’ve got Matip who can’t stand on his two feet for more than 90 minutes at a time, or certainly two 90 minutes in a row.

“Where do they go? I really don’t know. Klopp’s going to have to come up with some sort of genius plan, maybe they’re going to have to go with three at the back, have more people in the middle of the park to stop the opposition getting at the back line, considering the names on the back of the jerseys they’re going to end up with, whoever it may be.

“So this could be a big turning point in Liverpool’s season.”
