Mikel Arteta saved Arsenal’s loan signing of Dani Ceballos by stepping in and convincing club officials to accept Real Madrid’s terms in the deal, according to reports in Spain.
Ceballos, 24, sealed another loan move to the Emirates this season after spending the 2019/20 campaign with Arteta’s side.
The Spain midfielder proved a crucial member of his squad last term, playing an integral part in their FA Cup triumph.
As a result, Arteta was determined to bring him back to north London in the summer transfer window – and Marca claim he intervened to save the deal when negotiations hit a major stumbling block.
The Gunners reportedly wanted to re-sign Ceballos on a season-long loan deal which also included an option to buy the player outright, yet Madrid were not keen and are said to have ‘flatly refused’ those terms.
Los Blancos remained firm despite their best efforts, leaving Arteta fearful that the deal would not be finalised in time.
The Arsenal manager therefore stepped in and convinced club chiefs to accept the loan terms without an option-to-buy clause, insisting it would be better to at least have Ceballos in their ranks for one more season as opposed to none.
His intervention proved crucial in negotiations, with Ceballos soon securing another loan switch to the Emirates.
The Madrid ace has spoken of his delight to be back at Arsenal this season, having held frank discussions with Bernabeu bigwigs.
“I spoke with Madrid to say that Arteta wanted me to come back,” Ceballos said.
“They asked me to wait, but I was clear that I wanted to return to my club, where I had found myself very well.
