Rodriguez explains why he rejected Man Utd transfer ahead of facing Red Devils

James Rodriguez will come up against Manchester United on Saturday as the Red Devils travel to Everton.

The Colombian has made a lightning-quick start to life on Merseyside after Carlo Ancelotti signed him from Real Madrid.

He already has three goals and three assists in the top flight having featured in six of the Toffees' first seven games of the season.

Rodriguez has been linked with a move to United many times over the course of his career, which is unsurprising given the calibre of player he has been, and the size of the Old Trafford club.

He's been on United's radar for a decade, having first caught their attention as a teenager back in 2010, report Goal.

But United's evaluation of Rodriguez, despite him being heralded by scout Jose Mayorga, was that his playing style 'didn't suit' the Premier League.

United maintained interest, however, as Rodriguez began to carve out a reputation for himself at Porto.

And, having failed to sign Eden Hazard from Lille, United turned their attentions to trying to strike a deal for the now 29-year-old.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed out on Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani all arriving.

But their start to the season has been a mixed bag, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 thrashing by Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris at the other.

The question now is whether they can find the right balance?

But Rodriguez instead opted to sign for Monaco, where he enjoyed a successful campaign before going on to win the Golden Boot with a string of superb performances at the 2014 World Cup.

On rejecting United's advances, Rodriguez told Rio Ferdinand's YouTube show The Locker Room: "There was some kind of talk there. My agent (Jorge Mendes) has a great relationship with the club.

"We always dreamed of getting to a big club, and since I was a child, I always admired Manchester.

"I always saw those teams with Rio together with [Ryan] Giggs and [Paul] Scholes. There were a lot of prodigious players and I wanted to get there in that year. But it didn’t happen.

"I thought I had to play for a club that wasn’t so big.

"So, I went to France just before the World Cup and my plan was to go to the World Cup, have a great tournament, score goals, reach a good level and then play for a big club."
