Steve Smith praises 'brilliant' Rajasthan Royals star after Delhi IPL defeat

Steve Smith praised ‘brilliant’ England fast bowler Jofra Archer after Rajasthan Royals were beaten by Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Archer claimed figures of 3-19 from four overs as the Royals restricted Delhi to 161-7 in Dubai on Wednesday.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes then scored 41 and Jos Buttler smashed 22 from nine balls but Rajasthan still fell 13 runs short of victory as they slipped to a fifth defeat of the season.

The loss sees Smith’s side remain second from bottom while Delhi Capitals return to the top of the table with six wins from their eight matches.

Reacting to Rajasthan’s defeat to Delhi, Smith said: ‘It’s disappointing. Obviously the wicket slowed up a fair but, but we got off to a good start with Jos and Stokesy.

‘Then Sanju and Stokesy got partnership going but we lost too many wickets. On a slow wicket it is difficult to make up runs in the end.

‘We needed to take it deep with set batsmen. Guys kept getting in and kept getting out, and not making 60-odd to see us through.

‘The bowlers that have air speed have had the most success. Jofra has been brilliant for us and so have Nortje and Rabada for Delhi.

‘We are not in a great position, are we? We have got to quickly move on and come back with a big game in three days time.’

South Africa’s Anrich Nortje, who dismissed Buttler and Robin Uthappa, added: ‘I’ve been feeling really good so it is nice to see some results.

‘I try to stick to my strength, which is to hit the stumps and bowl fast. Maybe Jos was expecting something else, a short ball or something.

‘We have got a good coach, and obviously working with Kagiso Rabada and the other fast bowlers has been great.’
