Greenwood in more trouble as Man Utd hold talks over punctuality frustrations

Mason Greenwood has been hauled in for a stern chat regarding his punctuality at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old star striker has continued to attract attention with his antics off the pitch despite his positive form on it.

Greenwood was left out of England's most recent squad after he and Phil Foden sneaked two girls into the team hotel.

The striker apologised and promised to not repeat his mistakes. But it seems United have once again been left disappointed by Greenwood following his punctuality, according to Mail Online.

Greenwood was missing for both the Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain wins but Solskjaer played down his absence.

"I can't declare medical stuff, can I?" replied Solskjaer when asked about Greenwood's absence.

"It's just a niggle and, as young as he is, we don't want to take any chances with him. Hopefully at the weekend he'll be fine again."

Greenwood, though, was pictured in training prior to the PSG tie and it raised suspicions over the real nature of his omitance.

If Greenwood's absence was indeed down to disciplinary reasons it was a bold course for Solskjaer to take.

Martial was suspended for the Newcastle clash and Edinson Cavani was still in quarantine.

If the forward is missing this weekend then Solskjaer will almost certainly face some tougher questions.

Cavani’s private chat with Tuanzebe before Man Utd star’s heroics in PSG win

Axel Tuanzebe emerged as Manchester United’s unexpected star against Paris Saint-Germain – after a lengthy chat with Edinson Cavani.

Tuanzebe helped keep Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe quiet at the Parc Des Princes as Marcus Rashford’s late goal gave the Red Devils a 2-1 win.

The performance of the young centre-back caught many by surprise and saw him earn plenty of plaudits.

His display comes after he was spotted in a lengthy discussion with Cavani as United warmed up in their final training session at Carrington before heading to the French capital.

Whilst the details of their discussion are not clear, Cavani and Tuanzebe were engaged in a deep conversation for over a minute as they jogged around the pitch for the warm-up.

Cavani appeared to be gesturing potential scenarios and giving Tuanzebe advice as he listened intently with some speculating he may have been giving him some tips on how to stop his former PSG team-mates.

Tuanzebe’s performance drew high praise from Rio Ferdinand, who felt he had made himself undroppable for United’s next game.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: "This is where United have struggled in the last six to 12 months, chasing players down those channels.

“They can't stay with them and it opens up the back four, back three. But here, he was smelling danger.

"Ole has just said that's two of the best strikers in the world. He snuffed out danger on many occasion and you have to reward performances like that at a time of injuries.

"Again, first game in 10 months and to come in and play like that from out the cold you just deserve to be rewarded."

Tuanzebe, meanwhile, believes the victory showed United are still a big club amongst Europe’s elite.

The 22-year-old said: "We're a big club, and we're out here to compete. We're not here for the music or just for the parade.

"We worked hard last season to be in this competition, so we want to be the best we can and we wanted to start off just as we did here and continue this momentum going forward."

Ferdinand and Solskjaer in Tuanzebe agreement after Man Utd heroics

Rio Ferdinand and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer heaped praise on Axel Tuanzebe following his heroics in Manchester United's Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils had been on course for a morale-boosting start to Group H rather than a victorious one after Anthony Martial's second-half own goal cancelled out stand-in skipper Bruno Fernandes' spot-kick.

But 19 months on from securing their historic last-16 comeback triumph in the French capital, Marcus Rashford struck late to secure another stunning victory at PSG as United ran out 2-1 winners in their Champions League opener.

However it was the exploits of Tuanzebe which impressed pundits and managers alike, with the defender making his first appearance of 2020 after a torrid time with injuries.

United shackled PSG's star-studded backline, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe both frustrated by Tuanzebe, whose night in Paris was one to remember.

"Axel did fantastic," Solskjaer said of Tuanzebe, who could be in for more appearances after the United boss revealed Eric Bailly faces up to four weeks out with a muscle injury.

"He's been out since the game against Colchester, 10 months or something? To put up a performance like this against Neymar and Mbappe, I have to say he almost surprised us as well.

"We know he's a good player but on a night like this, he was fantastic. We might see this system again, of course, we have had some good games in it."

And former United defender Ferdinand believes Tuanzebe, who deputised for injured captain Harry Maguire, should retain his first-team spot.

Asked if Tuanzebe has made himself undroppable, Ferdinand told BT Sport: "Yes. Ole has just said it’s two of the best two strikers in the world, he snuffed out danger many a time today.

"You have to reward performances like that. He’s had a hard time with injuries – first game in 10 months – to come in and play like that, from in out of the cold, you deserve to be rewarded.

"But Ole is the man to make that decision."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s five biggest wins as Man Utd manager after PSG upset

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has certainly proved the doubters wrong since his Old Trafford return in 2018.

Tasked with steadying the ship in the aftermath of Jose Mourinho 's reign, the Norwegian has went on to oversee many successes in the dugout.

Solskjaer was facing early pressure this season after a below-par start to the season but has given himself some breathing space with two wins in four days.

The first, at Newcastle, featured a late rally – where as last night's triumph over PSG was a well-deserved win after battering the French champions for 90 minutes.

So as we approach two years of Solskjaer's United tenure – which five wins are his best?

PSG 1-3 Manchester United – March 2019

Solskjaer's greatest night as United boss came in Paris last year when his side beat the odds to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit against PSG.

Needing a huge turn around away from home, a heavily-depleted Red Devils side secured a 3-1 win, with Marcus Rashford netting a last-minute penalty to seal the win.

The victory also meant Solskjaer was offered the United gig on a full-time basis.

Manchester United 4-0 Chelsea – August 2019

Welcome to the Premier League, Frank Lampard.

The Chelsea boss' first taste of life as a top flight manager saw his Blues side demolished at Old Trafford.

Rashford impressed by scoring twice, while Anthony Martial and debutant Daniel James also go on the scoresheet as United recorded their biggest win over Chelsea at home since 1965.

Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United – December 2019

Not a game that did much for United – but one that put a big dent in Manchester City's title hopes.

After a fine victory at the Etihad last term, Pep Guardiola's side found themselves 14 points behind eventual champions Liverpool.

The gap to the Reds turned out to be even greater come the end of the season – but United fans got to enjoy knowing they had inflicted such a crushing derby day defeat before Christmas.

Both United goals came inside 30 minutes as Solskjaer again proved he can cut it against the bigger sides.

  • Man Utd pundits have Axel Tuanzebe theory after star shines in PSG victory

Leicester 0-2 Manchester United – July 2020

Would Solskjaer be in charge today had this result gone a different way?

United needed a point from the final-day clash to secure Champions League football.

But the Red Devils were in control at the King Power Stadium, securing the win through Bruno Fernandes and a late Jesse Lingard strike.

PSG 1-2 Manchester United – October 2020

Last night's victory has eased the pressure on Solskjaer, who was feeling the heat after a slow start and a poor transfer window.

The win was a deserved one, with United dominating from start to finish.

Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fred impressed for Solskjaer's side.

And Axel Tuanzebe played himself into contention at the heart of the defence.

Ferdinand backtracks on Solskjaer contract demand last time Man Utd played PSG

Rio Ferdinand has seemingly backtracked on his comments that he made last time Manchester United faced PSG.

The Red Devils shocked the French giants in the Champions League quarter-final in 2019 with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having been in caretaker charge at the time.

Ferdinand urged United to appoint the Norwegian on a permanent basis but Solskjaer has struggled this season.

He took his United side back to the French capital tonight as the Champions League returned with PSG in the same group. And it brought back memories of Ferdinand’s demands.

Following the remarkable win which put United into the quarter-finals in 2019, Ferdinand had said: "Listen, Man Utd might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table.

"Let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there given what he's done now since he's come in.

"Let him sign the contract and go. Ole's at the wheel. He's doing it, he's doing his thing. Man Utd are back!"

Though the United legend has now seemingly backtracked on those comments amid plenty of struggles for Solskjaer.

  • Man Utd fans disgusted with Sergio Romero treatment after latest brutal snub

Ferdinand said: "Listen we all get emotional. We all get involved. We all get invested. That was a great night for Manchester United.”

And when asked how he views Solskjaer’s reign, Ferdinand added: "I would say if I was sitting in his shoes I would be very frustrated.

“I said earlier I was filled with optimism at the end of last season.

"Got the team into Europe, the Champions League, which I'm sure would have been part of what was on the tin to do.

"But I feel in terms of acquisitions in the transfer market he'll be frustrated because he hasn't got what he wanted.

“I don't feel that whatever they've got in this window has improved the first 11. That's the problem."

Mason Greenwood’s absence for Man Utd win over Newcastle explained ahead of PSG

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained that Mason Greenwood was not fit to feature against Newcastle.

Greenwood did not travel with his team-mates to the north-east and missed out as United won 4-1.

Daniel James was recalled with Anthony Martial having been suspended and Edinson Cavani in quarantine.

It is not known what Greenwood’s problem is though the Red Devils are hoping for a quick recovery as they start their Champions League campaign against PSG this week.

"Mason wasn't fit to play, so we had to leave him out," Solskjaer said after the victory at Newcastle. "We hope he will recover quickly.

"Attacking-wise, I thought Dan with the speed would create problems for teams and Juan [Mata] and Bruno [Fernandes] are intelligent and create chances for us and we could have scored a few more.

"It’s not just about attackers though, it’s about the team working for each other pressing from the front.

“Dan has incredible speed on the counter and today he showed more positivity, he trusted himself.

  • How Man Utd could line up vs PSG as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces dilemma after Newcastle win

"We work with all the players to express themselves and show what they're good at.”

Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford were all on the scoresheet against Newcastle.

United had to recover from an early Luke Shaw own goal with Solskjaer enjoying the reaction from his side.

“[The early goal] made it a lot harder for everyone,” Solskjaer added. “It was hard enough as it was with the build-up to this game and the result from last time and then going 1-0 down after a minute and a half.

"I thought the boys responded fantastically. They were patient, resilient, they trusted what the plan was and in the end we created lots of chances to grind [out] a win.”

Man Utd target 16-year-old wonderkid hailed ‘the next Luis Figo’

Manchester United have yet another Sporting Lisbon wonderkid on their radar – Luis Gomes.

The 16-year-old signed his first professional deal last week but is already being hailed as the next Luis Figo in Portgual.

Although the youngster is now on a five-year deal at Sporting, United have agreed a first-refusal option should they decide to sell – complete with a £14million transfer fee.

United have previously taken Portugal stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Bruno Fernandes from Sporting.

Atletico Madrid had made enquiries about Gomes, but he chose to stay in Lisbon – while Old Trafford is his ultimate destination.

The teenager spoke of his delight at signing his first professional contract with a club he joined in 2010 at the tender age of six.

"It is a unique feeling," said Gomes. "This has always been one of my great goals since I joined the Academy.

"It is very good to feel that the club believes in me. Now I have to continue to work and fight to achieve more goals and return the confidence placed in me.

"I always dreamed that I could get here and I always want more. It is very good to see that it happened. It was many years and many trips. We went to many tournaments, but the effort paid off.

"One of my dreams is to reach the main team, and I will work for that."

Is £14million a good fee for Gomes or is it a risk on a player so young? Have your say here.

Gomes has been tipped to become the latest in a string of world-class talents produced by Sporting's academy, including Ballon d'Or winners Figo and Ronaldo.

Figo spent six years with Sporting before lucrative moves to Barcelona and Real Madrid saw him clinch the Ballon d'Or in 2000.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo left Sporting for the Red Devils aged 18 and went on to score 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club, winning countless titles and the Ballon d'Or in 2008.

He would go on to win the Ballon d'Or a further four times after his world-record move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2009.

Harry Maguire and Alex Telles included in Man Utd squad vs Newcastle

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has included Harry Maguire and Alex Telles in his travelling squad to face Newcastle on Saturday.

The Red Devils get back underway after the international break with a tough trip to St James’ Park.

United will be looking to put the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham firmly behind them by picking up all three points at Newcastle.

And Solskjaer has given the squad a boost by including two players who were a doubt – Maguire and Telles – according to the MEN.

Club captain Maguire picked up a knock before he was sent off during England’s defeat to Denmark on Wednesday.

But the centre-back is believed to have recovered well after a night to forget at Wembley, meaning he makes the squad.

Meanwhile, Telles featured in both of Brazil’s World Cup qualification matches over the break, shortly after making the move to United.

The 27-year-old only reported to United's Carrington training base on Thursday, but has also been included in the travelling party and could make his debut.

Edinson Cavani did not make the squad as he is still self-isolating after arriving from Paris from outside of an elite sporting bubble.

The selected squad of players flew to Newcastle from the private terminal at Manchester Airport on Friday afternoon.

Solskjaer gave Maguire his backing recently following the United skipper’s nightmares against Tottenham and Denmark.

"You're in the highlights all the time and when Harry is part of the England team that beats number one ranked Belgium it's just a normal day and you get the headlines when you get a sending off," Solskjaer said. "That's football for you. There are so many ups and downs, have to deal with it individually and as a group.

"Harry has got great resilience, I know he'll bounce back, I know he wants to play and work his way out of the last couple of games he's been criticised. He picked up a knock just before he came off. I'm just hopeful he'll be fit. We had a look at him yesterday and will give him a test today."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Paul Pogba stance after Real Madrid comments

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down talk of a potential exit for Paul Pogba, insisting the midfielder will be at Old Trafford for "another two years”.

Pogba, 27, has regularly been linked with a move away from United in recent years, with Real Madrid reportedly keen to bring him to the Bernabeu.

And last week the France star spoke openly about his desire to join Los Blancos, saying: “Yes, all footballers would like to play for Real Madrid.

“Maybe it is a dream. It is a dream for me, why not one day?”

Pogba’s current United deal is set to expire next summer, although the club have the option of extending it by a further 12 months.

If he fails to agree an extension before January, Madrid will be able to open negotiations with the £89million star over a free switch to Spain.

However, Solskjaer remains adamant that Pogba will not be going anywhere over the next two years.

“Paul's our player, he's going to be here for another two years,” the Red Devils manager said before their Premier League trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

“I’m sure Paul is focused on doing his best for us and we want to see the best of Paul and I'm sure in the next couple of years we'll get the best out of him.”

  • Man Utd slammed for two key transfer mistakes by Rene Meulensteen

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are also eyeing up a free move for Pogba at the turn of the year.

Real’s El Clasico rivals are reportedly strapped for cash in the current climate, which left them unable to splash the cash over the summer.

As a result, Barca chiefs are seeking a number of cut-price deals ahead of the January window.

Bayern Munich ace David Alaba, whose current contract at the Allianz Arena expires next summer, is also believed to be on their radar.

Nevertheless, Juventus are understood to be leading the race for Alaba, who has spent over a decade plying his trade for Bayern.

Luke Shaw identifies Bruno Fernandes impact as motivation for ‘hurt’ Man Utd

Luke Shaw has identified how new signings can motivate the squad – like Bruno Fernandes did when he joined Manchester United.

Prior to the international break, the Red Devils were thrashed by Tottenham at Old Trafford in a 6-1 result.

It topped off a shoddy start to the season, where United were also beaten by Crystal Palace.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under serious fire amid reports Mauricio Pochettino has been sounded out over joining.

But the Norweigan is not the only one to be criticised, with several players also under the microscope.

Among them include Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw – but the latter has insisted good times on the horizon.

And it is down to a busy deadline day, that saw three players join.

Alex Telles, Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellestri made the move, while highly-rated Atalanta star Amad Diallo will join in January.

Shaw argue that the new faces at Old Trafford will provide a welcome boost to the squad, just like Fernandes did when he signed in January.

“I think, personally, it still hurts a bit now,“ he said of the defeat to Spurs.

”It was a horrible night. Personally, and collectively as a team, it wasn’t good enough.

“I think it’s been a week where the first day back was quiet and heads were down but we’ve realised we need to put it behind us and forget about that.

"All we can do now is work hard to get back to the intensity we have had. When we do that, we are a very dangerous team.

“We’ve got a few new arrivals in and that can maybe boost the morale of the squad and bring something different.

"Fresh faces are sometimes a good thing. Like we saw with Bruno [Fernandes], it can change completely the mood of a squad.”
