Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s five biggest wins as Man Utd manager after PSG upset

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has certainly proved the doubters wrong since his Old Trafford return in 2018.

Tasked with steadying the ship in the aftermath of Jose Mourinho 's reign, the Norwegian has went on to oversee many successes in the dugout.

Solskjaer was facing early pressure this season after a below-par start to the season but has given himself some breathing space with two wins in four days.

The first, at Newcastle, featured a late rally – where as last night's triumph over PSG was a well-deserved win after battering the French champions for 90 minutes.

So as we approach two years of Solskjaer's United tenure – which five wins are his best?

PSG 1-3 Manchester United – March 2019

Solskjaer's greatest night as United boss came in Paris last year when his side beat the odds to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit against PSG.

Needing a huge turn around away from home, a heavily-depleted Red Devils side secured a 3-1 win, with Marcus Rashford netting a last-minute penalty to seal the win.

The victory also meant Solskjaer was offered the United gig on a full-time basis.

Manchester United 4-0 Chelsea – August 2019

Welcome to the Premier League, Frank Lampard.

The Chelsea boss' first taste of life as a top flight manager saw his Blues side demolished at Old Trafford.

Rashford impressed by scoring twice, while Anthony Martial and debutant Daniel James also go on the scoresheet as United recorded their biggest win over Chelsea at home since 1965.

Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United – December 2019

Not a game that did much for United – but one that put a big dent in Manchester City's title hopes.

After a fine victory at the Etihad last term, Pep Guardiola's side found themselves 14 points behind eventual champions Liverpool.

The gap to the Reds turned out to be even greater come the end of the season – but United fans got to enjoy knowing they had inflicted such a crushing derby day defeat before Christmas.

Both United goals came inside 30 minutes as Solskjaer again proved he can cut it against the bigger sides.

  • Man Utd pundits have Axel Tuanzebe theory after star shines in PSG victory

Leicester 0-2 Manchester United – July 2020

Would Solskjaer be in charge today had this result gone a different way?

United needed a point from the final-day clash to secure Champions League football.

But the Red Devils were in control at the King Power Stadium, securing the win through Bruno Fernandes and a late Jesse Lingard strike.

PSG 1-2 Manchester United – October 2020

Last night's victory has eased the pressure on Solskjaer, who was feeling the heat after a slow start and a poor transfer window.

The win was a deserved one, with United dominating from start to finish.

Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fred impressed for Solskjaer's side.

And Axel Tuanzebe played himself into contention at the heart of the defence.

Mason Greenwood’s absence for Man Utd win over Newcastle explained ahead of PSG

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained that Mason Greenwood was not fit to feature against Newcastle.

Greenwood did not travel with his team-mates to the north-east and missed out as United won 4-1.

Daniel James was recalled with Anthony Martial having been suspended and Edinson Cavani in quarantine.

It is not known what Greenwood’s problem is though the Red Devils are hoping for a quick recovery as they start their Champions League campaign against PSG this week.

"Mason wasn't fit to play, so we had to leave him out," Solskjaer said after the victory at Newcastle. "We hope he will recover quickly.

"Attacking-wise, I thought Dan with the speed would create problems for teams and Juan [Mata] and Bruno [Fernandes] are intelligent and create chances for us and we could have scored a few more.

"It’s not just about attackers though, it’s about the team working for each other pressing from the front.

“Dan has incredible speed on the counter and today he showed more positivity, he trusted himself.

  • How Man Utd could line up vs PSG as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces dilemma after Newcastle win

"We work with all the players to express themselves and show what they're good at.”

Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford were all on the scoresheet against Newcastle.

United had to recover from an early Luke Shaw own goal with Solskjaer enjoying the reaction from his side.

“[The early goal] made it a lot harder for everyone,” Solskjaer added. “It was hard enough as it was with the build-up to this game and the result from last time and then going 1-0 down after a minute and a half.

"I thought the boys responded fantastically. They were patient, resilient, they trusted what the plan was and in the end we created lots of chances to grind [out] a win.”

Harry Maguire and Alex Telles included in Man Utd squad vs Newcastle

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has included Harry Maguire and Alex Telles in his travelling squad to face Newcastle on Saturday.

The Red Devils get back underway after the international break with a tough trip to St James’ Park.

United will be looking to put the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham firmly behind them by picking up all three points at Newcastle.

And Solskjaer has given the squad a boost by including two players who were a doubt – Maguire and Telles – according to the MEN.

Club captain Maguire picked up a knock before he was sent off during England’s defeat to Denmark on Wednesday.

But the centre-back is believed to have recovered well after a night to forget at Wembley, meaning he makes the squad.

Meanwhile, Telles featured in both of Brazil’s World Cup qualification matches over the break, shortly after making the move to United.

The 27-year-old only reported to United's Carrington training base on Thursday, but has also been included in the travelling party and could make his debut.

Edinson Cavani did not make the squad as he is still self-isolating after arriving from Paris from outside of an elite sporting bubble.

The selected squad of players flew to Newcastle from the private terminal at Manchester Airport on Friday afternoon.

Solskjaer gave Maguire his backing recently following the United skipper’s nightmares against Tottenham and Denmark.

"You're in the highlights all the time and when Harry is part of the England team that beats number one ranked Belgium it's just a normal day and you get the headlines when you get a sending off," Solskjaer said. "That's football for you. There are so many ups and downs, have to deal with it individually and as a group.

"Harry has got great resilience, I know he'll bounce back, I know he wants to play and work his way out of the last couple of games he's been criticised. He picked up a knock just before he came off. I'm just hopeful he'll be fit. We had a look at him yesterday and will give him a test today."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Paul Pogba stance after Real Madrid comments

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down talk of a potential exit for Paul Pogba, insisting the midfielder will be at Old Trafford for "another two years”.

Pogba, 27, has regularly been linked with a move away from United in recent years, with Real Madrid reportedly keen to bring him to the Bernabeu.

And last week the France star spoke openly about his desire to join Los Blancos, saying: “Yes, all footballers would like to play for Real Madrid.

“Maybe it is a dream. It is a dream for me, why not one day?”

Pogba’s current United deal is set to expire next summer, although the club have the option of extending it by a further 12 months.

If he fails to agree an extension before January, Madrid will be able to open negotiations with the £89million star over a free switch to Spain.

However, Solskjaer remains adamant that Pogba will not be going anywhere over the next two years.

“Paul's our player, he's going to be here for another two years,” the Red Devils manager said before their Premier League trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

“I’m sure Paul is focused on doing his best for us and we want to see the best of Paul and I'm sure in the next couple of years we'll get the best out of him.”

  • Man Utd slammed for two key transfer mistakes by Rene Meulensteen

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are also eyeing up a free move for Pogba at the turn of the year.

Real’s El Clasico rivals are reportedly strapped for cash in the current climate, which left them unable to splash the cash over the summer.

As a result, Barca chiefs are seeking a number of cut-price deals ahead of the January window.

Bayern Munich ace David Alaba, whose current contract at the Allianz Arena expires next summer, is also believed to be on their radar.

Nevertheless, Juventus are understood to be leading the race for Alaba, who has spent over a decade plying his trade for Bayern.

Ole Gunnar Solskjae could allow four players to leave in January transfer window

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to focus on trimming his squad in January.

The Red Devils made four Deadline Day signings though did not manage to offload as many players as they wanted to.

Chris Smalling joined Roma but there are plenty of faces in the United squad that may be seen as surplus to Solskjaer.

Sergio Romero has become third-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford with David de Gea the No. 1 and Dean Henderson battling to be Solskjaer’s man.

Romero wanted to leave United in the summer with his wife hitting out at the Red Devils, and is now likely to depart in January.

Phil Jones could also be leaving Solskjaer’s side come January with there being plenty of defensive options for the Norwegian.

Dan James only joined United last summer and impressed in his first few matches but the Welshman has struggled recently.

Leeds United are believed to be interested and Solskjaer may be willing to let James depart with Mason Greenwood ahead of him in the right-wing position.

  • Juan Mata 'rejected £18m contract' to stay at Man Utd despite lack of game time

The future of Paul Pogba is again in doubt with the Frenchman praising Zinedine Zidane and admitting a move to Real Madrid is a “dream”.

Donny van de Beek arrived at Old Trafford in the summer and could be seen as a replacement for Pogba.

It means the door may be open for World Cup winner Pogba to leave as early as January with Real Madrid surely in pole position for him.

Solskjaer had spoke about how happy he was with his squad ahead of transfer deadline day.

The boss had said: "Of course, the performances last season didn't warrant me giving too many of them more options.

“I think the 11, 12, 13 players that really played and really played well deserved to play more and that means when you don't play you don't get the fitness and sharpness you need to knock on the door to get into the team.

"I think it's a different scenario now already after two games. I've seen many of the other players who didn't play too much last season play really well."

Two reasons Man Utd pulled plug on Erling Haaland transfer back in January

The reason for Manchester United’s failure to sign Erling Haaland back in the January transfer window has reportedly been revealed.

The Red Devils were thought to be leading the race to sign Haaland, who was emerging as one of the top strikers in the world at RB Salzburg.

However, the Norwegian opted to join Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund instead, and has gone on to replicate his form in Germany.

It was thought that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had met with Haaland in December and had struck an agreement, only to see the £18m deal fall through.

And according to ESPN, Ed Woodward pulled the plug on a deal because of demands around agent fees and the requirement for a release clause in his contract.

Meanwhile, Dortmund did agree to both terms, meaning they managed to complete the transfer and leave United looking a little red-faced.

The news comes as Paul Scholes reportedly told Stadium Astro reporter Alison Bender that United should ditch their pursuit of Jadon Sancho, and look to sign either Harry Kane and Erling Haaland instead as they need a new striker more than a winger.

Old Trafford legend Scholes also criticised the club for not fully backing Solskjaer in the transfer market, though he admits his former team-mate has been supported more than previous managers.

"I don't think he's the first one who hasn't been backed,” he said.

"There's been a lot of money spent but has it been spent on the first choices these managers want? I'm not too sure.

"I think Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho especially had a moan about that and it's understandable when they aren't getting the players they want.

"I think Ole's been supported. I think Maguire at £80m is a lot of money, Fernandes just in January has been an excellent signing and the form was good especially coming from Fernandes in January time, you felt that this team was going places.

"Towards the end of the season it's a lot easier to win games, it's a lot easier to go on a run when the pressure's not really on.

"Okay you can talk about pressure to get in that top four but that's not the pressure United want, United want to be winning leagues.

"You felt at the end of last season he would have got more support in the transfer market to go on again to that next level but he's not been given that.

"It's quite clear the players he wanted have not come."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaks out on Man Utd’s director of football search

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United chiefs are still discussing the possibility of bringing in a director of football.

There are increased calls for United to bring in someone to oversee off-field football-related matters at Old Trafford after another summer of calamity in the transfer window.

United failed in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho and failed to strengthen their struggling centre defence.

And the business they did do was largely completed on Deadline Day, suggesting that United are again not learning from their mistakes of yesteryear.

Ed Woodward and Matt Judge are currently in charge of completing deals, with an influence from Solskjaer, but fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with the way they are going about their business.

But Solskjaer has now responded to the calls for the club to bring in added knowledge in the field.

He said: “There’s always people who want to talk about how well they’re running things and how well they’re doing.

“We’ve all got different views on how football should be played and how clubs should be run.

“We’ve got good people running our club and there’s always discussions behind the scenes, which people don’t know about, around how we’re doing things and evaluating everything.

“It’s a process the club is going through all the time, discussing if we’ve got the right people in the right positions.

“It’s not for me to say whether we should have a director of football.

“At the moment we’re working with this structure and I feel the results last season we’ve seen a big improvement, fans looked at us and said we’re moving in the right direction. Hopefully we can carry that on this season.”

Sevilla's highly-rated director of football Monchi has previously laid into United for not having an expert in the role.

He has said: “I can't believe a club like Manchester United does not have this particular position. It's essential.

“All club's should have one. When 60-70% of the budget is allocated to the first team, if you don't have a specialist who deals with it that is very difficult to understand.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still wants to sign Man Utd’s top two transfer targets

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not given up hope of landing Borussia Dortmund pair Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland after missing out on both in the last 10 months.

The youthful duo are still the top two transfer targets at Old Trafford as Solskjaer believes they would be great assets for United in the long-term, ESPN reports.

United pulled out of a deal for Haaland back in January leaving the path clear for Dortmund to swoop and nab the striker for an initial outlay of just €20million (£18m).

It was United's reluctance to fork out the related agents fees which saw them withdraw, while they were also not prepared to include a release clause in the Norwegian's contract.

Haaland, 20, has since been hitting top form in Germany, scoring 22 times in 23 appearances.

Meanwhile United's failed pursuit of Sancho has been well publicised.

Dortmund made clear their demands must be met before their deadline of August 10 but United were not willing to play ball.

Had United been prepared to pay the £108m fee Dortmund were asking there is a good chance Sancho would have been allowed to leave after that date, but such a bid was not forthcoming.

In the end United would only go as far as £91m, with the rejection of that offer forcing them to scramble around for other targets on deadline day.

Who should United prioritise signing next? Have your say below.

Among them, United signed veteran striker Edinson Cavani as well as two youth prospects – Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo – both of whom play in Sancho's preferred right-wing slot.

Those arrivals have not deterred Solskjaer though who remains keen on bringing both Haaland and Sancho to Old Trafford in the future.

After a frustrating summer, Solskjaer has now been given another issue to contend with as midfielder Paul Pogba talked up a move to Real Madrid.

In his latest glance at another club, the Frenchman said: "Yes, all footballers would like to play for Real Madrid. Maybe it is a dream. It is a dream for me, why not one day."

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has earmarked new signing Alex Telles as a "fighter and a winner" who will improve the team.

United have now confirmed the signing of the Brazilian left-back from Porto for a fee of around £17m, putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with an option of a further year.

"First and foremost, I welcome Alex to United," Solskjaer told the club's official website. "He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for.

"He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.

"Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United."

Meanwhile, Telles spoke about his desire to continue winning trophies now he has joined United and paid tribute to Solskjaer for having "a clear plan and direction for this team".

He said: "To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.

  • How Man Utd could line up after Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles transfers are completed

"You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.

"I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United. The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt."

The 27-year-old Brazil international is United's second major signing, after the addition of £40m midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

Telles' arrival will put pressure on current first-choice left-back Luke Shaw, who came under fire for his display in the humiliating 6-1 loss to Tottenham, and Telles will be in contention to make his debut when United take on Newcastle in their next Premier League fixture.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fumes Erik Lamela needs "operation" after red card incident

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hit out at Erik Lamela for his role in Anthony Martial’s sending off during Manchester United’s 6-1 defeat against Tottenham.

United were torn to shreds by Spurs at Old Trafford, conceding four goals in the first half of a Premier League match for the first time in their history.

Martial’s sending off while the hosts were trailing 2-1 proved a pivotal turning point in the game, with Jose Mourinho’s side going on to score another four goals.

The Frenchman was shown a red card after appearing to slap Lamela, who threw himself to the ground when he felt contact.

And Solskjaer has blasted the Spurs ace for helping to get Martial sent off on the day, sarcastically suggesting he “must be having an operation” on the injury.

“There's no excuse. He must be having an operation the boy [Lamela] on his throat,” the United manager said in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.

“Bad reaction by Anthony but it's no excuse. The game's not lost there and then. We were in the game by then and if that was one of my players I would absolutely hang him up to dry because you don't go down like that.

“If Ant had gone down it would have gone the other way.

“He shouldn't react like that.”

United appeared vulnerable before Martial’s sending off, falling 2-1 behind after seven minutes despite initially taking the lead through Bruno Fernandes.

It was an alarming performance from the Red Devils, who find themselves down in 16th place.

Solskjaer also told BBC Sport: “It is the worst day of my career as Manchester United manager and the worst day for all of them as United players.
